Flooring & Cladding: Terrazzo Projects

The largest project undertaken to date is the Victoria Centre, Nottingham where the Terrazzo flooring on the ground floor was completely removed and replaced with a lighter, more updated scheme. The project involved some 6000m2 of flooring. The main area being 5500m2 took some 9 months to complete with work being carried out day and night - small continuous sections were worked on meaning that trading was largely unaffected with minimal disruption to customer traffic.

New works have also been carried out at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, a rear entrance and exhibition hall for The Black Country Museum in Dudley, the Atrium floor to the Computer Science Building at Warwick University.

Refurbishment projects are vast, and include the large supermarket chains such as Asda, Safeway, Tesco, Somerfield and Kwik-Save.

Below are photographs showing a completed floor at a new health & fitness centre. The materials used were 497x497x38mm pastel terrazzo tiles laid on fresh screed bedding.

The tiles are complemented by using 50mm thick pre-cast open tread units to match the main floor with contrasting anti-slip inserts, all fixed directly onto a structural steel staircase.

The total area of flooring is 270m2, but the use of pale colour with open stairway serves to give the project a feeling of much greater size. The floor is finished to a medium hone to allow reasonable anti slip properties combined with ease of cleaning.

Terrazzo Repair Projects

This floor was originally laid as specified in the first phase of a major pharmaceutical company's research building within the Cambridge Universities. Subsequently the newer building had marginal level differences to the first and the only way to proceed with the use of terrazzo was to produce a specially made calibrated tile at 19mm thick. No sacrifice was made to the terrazzo wearing surface or its durability. The tiles were then laid over a levelling compound on adhesive specified by the designer. The photos show where repairs to damage caused by heavy objects being carelessly dragged across the floor's surface are visible. This difference in appearance is a feature of repairing any polished floor but will disappear eventually once normal foot traffic and regular cleaning are resumed.
